We\u2019re used to seeing conventional cemeteries where caskets are buried and loved ones gather around gravestones. Indeed, traditional gravestones are commonly used to commemorate the life of the deceased.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, you should know that there are alternatives for those who wish to have a burial without a gravestone. Natural cemeteries, for instance, provide a unique and peaceful final resting place, while contributing to the conservation of nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

The impacts of burials and gravestones<\/span><\/h2>\n

Burials and gravestones (granite gravestones, for example) have long stood as focal features in memorializing those who have passed. They do, however, raise genuine concerns, including:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Limited available space in traditional cemeteries<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Environmental impact of interment (excavation equipment, embalming chemicals, stone extraction procedures for gravestone manufacturing, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Lack of flexibility in terms of the size and location of gravestones<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Upkeep<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Risk of vandalism\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    And not to mention the burial costs in conventional cemeteries.<\/span><\/p>\n

    How much do burials cost in conventional cemeteries?<\/span><\/h3>\n

    To determine the burial costs in a conventional cemetery, you have to consider the interment cost, the casket and the gravestone. It can really add up.<\/span><\/p>\n

    For example, in Quebec, gravestone prices range from $500 to $3,000+ depending on the type of stone, engravings and embellishments. To be buried in a cemetery, you have to purchase (or lease) a plot. Standard plots can cost anything from $1,000 to $3,000. You can even choose a \u201cdouble-depth\u201d plot, where prices can reach up to $6,000. As for the casket, average models sell for around $1,500. So the total, just for the burial, can add up to well over $7,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Alternatives to gravestones<\/span><\/h2>\n

    If you\u2019re interested in taking a less costly and more eco-friendly route for your prearrangements or those of a loved one, alternatives do exist. Cremation, for instance, is a greener solution than interment. In fact, it pollutes three times less than traditional burials. Similarly, aquamation\u2013also referred to as water cremation\u2013is also gaining in popularity. While cremation releases 160\u00a0kg of CO<\/span>2<\/span> into the atmosphere, water cremation releases only 1\u00a0kg (<\/span>source Radio-Canada<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

    There also exists a variety of funeral monuments that don\u2019t weigh as heavily on the environment as traditional gravestones. Here are a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n
