How gathering as a family in a cemetery can bring healing

13 July 2021

Cemeteries are where families often come together to remember and keep the memory of a loved one alive. Throughout the history of mankind, mourning and burial rites have played a central role in our traditions. Visiting the deceased in cemeteries is also an important and long-standing ritual surrounding grief.

Cemeteries cater to basic needs

Whether it is to talk, to pay tribute, to celebrate or simply to remember, at one moment or another, all mourning families wish to reunite with their lost loved ones. This can be achieved simply through thoughts or memories. However, visiting a cemetery is a way for many to experience a deeper connection by bridging the physical environment and symbolic rituals. When contemplating a tomb or memorial, we witness the unique resting place of those who have passed, peacefully apart from the world of the living, but still within reach to allow respite.

Visiting a cemetery–A way of “taking care” of a deceased loved one

For many people, visiting the burial site of a loved one is a concrete way to give time to the deceased. We sometimes feel a stronger connection in a cemetery as our entire attention and time are devoted to contemplation and personal thoughts. Cemeteries create a break from the outside world. With each visit, we can observe our path to healing or allow ourselves to experience pain when it is still heavy.

Visiting the cemetery as a family to share and create new memories

Many people visit the cemetery as a family on important dates such as during the holidays, on the birthday of the deceased or on the anniversary of their death. These moments allow us to share memories about our lost loved one with relatives, thus allowing to create new traditions surrounding these reunions.

Modern-day cemeteries designed to inspire and welcome bereaved families

As generations are changing along with their needs, so are cemeteries. The cemetery at Les Sentiers was designed with this in mind. Our goal was to create a familiar, natural, serene and well looked-after environment where bereaved families would feel comfortable and welcome whenever they would visit. A sanctuary to guide and support loved ones through their grieving process, one visit at a time.

The power of nature

Our cemetery is set in a natural environment, providing visitors with a spacious and more intimate space. The nearby river and surrounding forest immerse visitors in the blissful sounds of running water and nature, for a peaceful, serene experience that makes our site truly unique.

Small details that make a big difference

When visiting a deceased loved one as a family, small details can go a long way in making the experience more enjoyable. With this in mind, we offer picnic tables throughout the site as well as a play area for children. Also, our walking paths allow families to make the moment last longer or go for a tranquil stroll. This unique approach allows for smooth progression through the grieving process.
